Sister Dorothy loved her years in Ventnor where she helped to make everyone’s vacation time enjoyable with her kind, understanding, hospitable and generous nature. Her gentle sense of humor added to the community life she shared with others.
Sister Dorothy Emanuel (Sister Dorothy Maria) was born July 24, 1928 in the Bronx, New York, one of three daughters of Frank and Regina Goldschmidt Emanuel. Dorothy attended Saint Barnabas Elementary and Saint Barnabas High School and worked for a year before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1946. Sister Dorothy earned a BA in Mathematics from College of Mount Saint Vincent, a master’s degree in teaching Mathematics from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., later earning permanent certification in Mathematics from New York State.
Sister Dorothy began her thirty-four years of ministry in education on the elementary level. She taught in Saint John the Baptist, Brooklyn, Saints Peter and Paul, Bronx, and Saint Sylvia in Tivoli, New York. Sister then moved to the high school level and beyond, teaching religion and math at Saint Gabriel in New Rochelle, math at York Catholic in Pennsylvania and Cathedral HS and Grace Institute, both in Manhattan. Sister Dorothy served three terms, ten years in all, on the administrative team at the Convent of Mary the Ocean Star in Ventnor, New Jersey. In between her Ventnor services, Sister Dorothy managed the finances for Mount Saint Vincent Convent and served as Assistant to the Registrar at College of Mount Saint Vincent. When the convent in Ventnor closed in 2001, Sister Dorothy returned to congregation service at Mount Saint Vincent Convent. She lived there until 2013 when she retired at the Convent of Mary the Queen in Yonkers. In 2014, Sister was among the first group of sisters to move to the new retirement community in Kittay (House) Senior Apartments in the Bronx, where she died April 19, 2019.
Sister Dorothy loved her years in Ventnor where she helped to make everyone’s vacation time enjoyable with her kind, understanding, hospitable and generous nature. Her gentle sense of humor added to the community life she shared with others. She is remembered as a die-hard Mets fan, never missing an opportunity to watch or, if possible, go to a ballgame.
Sister Dorothy, we rejoice with you now as you are welcomed home by your loving God whom she served so well as a Sister of Charity. Be at peace, Sister Dorothy.
