Sister Marie’s students, their parents and all who knew her will long remember her kindness, generosity and compassion.
Sister Marie Schutté (Sister Catherine Maureen) was born in Brooklyn May 16, 1924. She was one of three daughters and three sons of George and Catherine Schneller Schutté. Marie attended Saint Brigid School and Bishop McDonnell High School, both in Brooklyn. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1943. Sister Catherine earned a BS in History from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and an MA in Education, with a specialization in Reading, from Manhattan College. She later earned permanent NYS certification in Social Studies.
Sister Marie spent almost fifty years in the ministry of elementary education. She began her work in Saint Margaret of Cortona School, followed by Saints Peter and Paul School, both in the Bronx. She then taught in Saint Francis Xavier School and Saint Emeric School, both in Manhattan. From there, she returned to Saint Margaret of Cortona School, Bronx, after which she spent the rest of her years of education ministry in Yonkers, N.Y. She first taught in Saint Peter’s School and then Saint Ann’s School before becoming a Reading Specialist with the Yonkers Board of Education. She spent twenty years working in the Yonkers Public School System and, upon her retirement, Sister Marie spent another seventeen years as a teaching volunteer in various sites in Yonkers. Sister retired in 2008 to the ministry of prayer, service and witness. In 2013, she moved to the House of the Good Shepherd in Hackettstown, N.J., near her family.
Sister Marie was a quiet and thoughtful person. She highly valued education and conveyed her love of learning to all her students. She instilled in them the desire to succeed, fueled by a desire to learn. Her students, their parents and all who knew her will long remember her kindness, generosity and compassion. Sister Marie, we rejoice with you now as you enter into the loving embrace of our God whom you served so long and so well. Rest in everlasting peace, Sister Marie.

May Sister Catherine Maureen as we knew her, rest in peace. What a grand array of ministerial dedication and service to so many. May she be blessed.
At SFX Grammar School, she and Sister Miriam Brendan were good friends and support for one another dealing with us 7th & 8th grade budding teenagers. All the Sisters of Charity who taught my class (SFX 1949-1957) have all been blessed to persevere and gone to God – Sisters Patronella, Patricia Dolores, Regina de Lourdes, John Maureen, Miriam Brendan, and now Catherine Maureen. It wasn’t always easy but they sought our good at all times. Thank you Sisters of Charity of New York for having such devoted women in ministry!
Thank you, Brother Kenney, for your kind words. Blessings to you.
