Both in and out of the classroom, Sister Joan was known as a kind and compassionate person who enjoyed teaching and various other jobs where she worked closely with people of all ages.
Sister Joan Glowacki (Sister Maria Seton) was born December 22, 1927 in Maspeth, Queens, the daughter of Francis and Sophie Kaminski Glowacki. She attended Holy Family School, Bronx, and Cathedral HS, NYC, before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1946. She received a BA in English from the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
Sister Joan’s ministry in the field of elementary education spanned almost thirty years. Her first mission was Resurrection School, Rye, followed by Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Manhattan, and Saint Patrick School, Bedford, NY. Sister Joan was then sent to Saint Monica School, Jamaica, Queens, Saint Barnabas School, Bronx, and Our Lady of the Angelus School, Rego Park, Queens. Sister Joan spent one year at Saint Joseph by-the-Sea HS, Staten Island, providing secretarial services before returning to teaching at Saints Peter and Paul School, Bronx, Resurrection School, Rye, and Saint Joseph School, Yonkers. After a year of study, Sister Joan worked as a clerical and library assistant at Saint Joseph’s School, Yonkers, and Saint Joseph by-the-Sea HS, Staten Island. She became the receptionist at Mount Saint Vincent Convent for three years and then worked as a volunteer at Yonkers General Hospital. In 1998, Sister Joan retired to the ministry of prayer, service and witness and moved to the Convent of Mary the Queen in 2001. She lived there until 2014 when she moved with the first group of sisters to Kittay House in the Bronx.
Both in and out of the classroom, Sister Joan was known as a kind and compassionate person who enjoyed teaching and various other jobs where she worked closely with people of all ages. We rejoice with her now as she is welcomed home by our loving God whom she served so long and so well. Be at peace, Sister Joan.

I am so sorry to learn of the death of Sister Joan. I had her in the 4th grade in Our Lady of Good Counsel when I was in the 4th grade,1956/1957. She was a wonderful teacher. My brother had her the very next year as did my brother in law James Fitzgearad, who was Barbara Fitzgerald’s cousin. She was once part of the Sisters of Charity for almost 25 years. I am very sadden to learn of her passing. I wish I had known she wa still alive as it would have been lovely to see her again. I will keep her in my prayers. May she rest in peace.
Thank you for your kind words. Your prayers are very much appreciated.
St. Barnabas High School mourns the loss of Sr. Joan. She was a joyful presence to our students as she helped them in our library.
May she rest in peace.
Oh my! She was my favorite elementary teacher at OLGC. May she Rest In Peace.
Rest In Peace Aunt Joan. You will be greatly missed. Love always Denise, Scott and my beloved Jessica
Sister Joan (Maria Seton) was my teacher in both second and fourth grade at Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Manhattan. What an energetic and effective teacher she was! We kept in touch over the many years after she left OLGC in 1960. I visited her for the last time two months ago at Kittay House in the Bronx. Through all her suffering she maintained her abiding faith in God, sense of humor and vivid memories of days gone by. I would have attended her funeral, but I now live in Ohio. Circumstances did not permit. I am grateful that I was able to watch the mass on live stream.
You “have fought the good fight fight,” Sister Joan. May you now rest in the arms of our Loving God, forever!
Rest In Peace Aunt Joan. She was always such a kind and caring soul. Love, Chrissy, Samantha and Nicholas
