A primary grades teacher par excellence, Sister Nora will long be remembered by her students and their parents for her quiet, gentle and compassionate nature, which endeared her to all with whom she lived and worked.
Sister Nora Hearty (Sister Honoria Maria) was born June 19, 1932, in Bronx, New York, one of seven children, four daughters and three sons, of Robert and Annie McEvoy Hearty. Nora attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School, the Bronx, and Cathedral High School, Manhattan, before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1951.
Sister Nora earned a BA in History from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, the Bronx, and an MS in Elementary Education from Richmond College, Staten Island. She later merited permanent certification from New York State in Grades Nursery through 6.
Sister Nora served in the ministry of education for forty years, twenty-five in the classroom and fifteen in administrative support. She taught at Resurrection, Rye; Saint Raymond, Saint Barnabas and Visitation, the Bronx; Saint Joseph Academy, Manhattan; Sacred Heart, Staten Island; and Elizabeth Seton Academy, Yonkers. Sister Nora’s secretarial skills assisted Holy Trinity School, Mamaroneck, and Our Lady of Victory High School, Dobbs Ferry, in addition to the Provincial Office of the Marist Brothers, Pelham, New York.
Beginning in 2000, Sister Nora offered volunteer services in the Religious Education program of Saint Joseph Parish, Yonkers, tutored children in primary grades, and contributed to the outreach programs of the sisters with whom she lived at Saint Joseph Convent, Yonkers. In 2015, Sister Nora retired to Mount Saint Vincent Convent and then moved to Cabrini of Westchester, Dobbs Ferry, where she died on March 6, 2020.
A primary grades teacher par excellence, Sister Nora will long be remembered by her students and their parents for her quiet, gentle and compassionate nature, which endeared her to all with whom she lived and worked. She had a great sense of humor, a ready smile and was always willing to help in any given situation.
We rejoice with her now as she is welcomed home by her loving family, the Sisters of Charity who have gone before her, and our loving God whom she served so long and so well. Rest in peace, Sister Nora.
