Sister Margaret Mary will be remembered for her kindness, gentleness and compassion, her organizational skills, her sense of humor, and her love of community life.

Sr. Margaret Mary Hannon, SCSister Margaret Mary Hannon (Sister Marie Daniel) was born December 7, 1917, in Manhattan, one of seven children of Daniel and Mary O’Connor Hannon. Margaret Mary attended Sacred Heart School, Blessed Sacrament High School, and Grace Institute, all in Manhattan. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1937. Sister Daniel earned her BA in History from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and her MA in American and European History from Saint John’s University. She later earned permanent certification in teaching English as a second language.

Sister Margaret Mary spent thirteen years in the ministry of elementary education. She taught in Saint Stephen School and Saint Paul School, both in Brooklyn, and in Saint Gabriel School in Queens. In 1952, Sister moved into secondary education, teaching history at Bishop McDonnell High School, Brooklyn, Cathedral High School and All Saints High School, both in Manhattan. When Sister Margaret Mary left the field of teaching, she used her secretarial skills learned at Grace Institute in her service at the Adult Education Department of the Archdiocese of New York, Adept Associates, Saint Ignatius Loyola School, and Regis High School, all in Manhattan. She retired in 1999 and moved to the Convent of Mary the Queen in 2000. Sister Margaret Mary lived there until 2014, when she was among the first group of sisters to move to the Jewish Home Lifecare Assisted Living Program. In 2017, she celebrated her 100th birthday in style with her family and the Sisters at her Assisted Living home.

Sister Margaret Mary will be remembered for her kindness, gentleness and compassion, her organizational skills, her sense of humor, and her love of community life. She was a true Sister of Charity, living the virtues of humility, simplicity and charity. We rejoice with her now as she is welcomed home by our loving God whom she served so long and so well.

Rest in peace, “Aunt” Sister Margaret Mary.
