The Sisters of Charity of New York welcome the Holy Father’s appointment of Bishop Hicks as the next Archbishop of New York.

We receive this moment with prayer and hope, mindful of the immense pastoral responsibility entrusted to the Archbishop of New York and the profound needs of the people of this city and archdiocese.

New York is a place of extraordinary diversity, resilience, struggle, and possibility-and it calls for leadership rooted in humility, courage, and deep attentiveness to those on the margins.

As women religious whose mission has long been shaped by the realities of this city-its immigrants, its poor, its children, its sick, and its seekers-we are certain that Bishop Hicks’ ministry will be marked by a listening heart, a commitment to justice, and a Gospel-centered concern for those most often unheard.

We also offer our gratitude to Cardinal Timothy Dolan for his years of service to the Archdiocese of New York. We thank him for his pastoral leadership and hold him in prayer as he concludes this chapter of his ministry.

In the spirit of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who taught us to “meet the needs of the times,” we look forward to continuing our shared work with the local Church-walking together in faith, serving the common good, and witnessing to a Church that shows up with compassion, integrity, and hope.

We pray God’s blessing upon Bishop Hicks as he begins this new ministry among the people of New York.
