Sister Margaret Beaudette, born in 1928 in Astoria, Queens, joined the Sisters of Charity of New York shortly after after graduating high school. As she explains in this 2006 conversation with a University of Mount Saint Vincent student, she taught art at various levels in SCNY-led schools across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Westchester County, leaving education in 1987 to pursue her art full-time. Sr. Margaret created sculptures for her entire adult life, with 65 large sculptures across the U.S., France, Bermuda, and Haiti. In this interview, Sister Margaret reflects on her lifelong artistry and commitment to the SCNY mission through art and creativity, as well as her proudest moments as a Sister. Sister Margaret passed away on March 12, 2017 at the age of 89. In her own words; “My sculpture was the best way I could express that God, ever compassionate and kind, is incarnated in the figures I sculpt.”
