Companions in Charity

Believe      Celebrate      Share

The Companions in Charity is an intentional community in the spirit of Saints Elizabeth, Louise and Vincent. Wherever they are, they unite in prayer at the same time every Tuesday and Thursday.

The Companions meet monthly to pray, celebrate and share life. They take part in at least one of two retreats offered each year. Each has a ministry of personal choice to share and spread God’s great love.

“You will often be at a standstill for what is best in a situation so new….Only do your best and leave the rest to God.”  Elizabeth Seton

We are in a new moment of history. We have a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all God’s creation. One of these experiences is a non-canonical form of religious life which brings us to the origin of the Companions in Charity.

The seeds were planted when the Sisters of Charity walked through the “pink door” at Assembly 2011 and were given the directive to explore new forms of religious life. Sister Jane contacted Sister Mary Ann Donovan who had expressed an interest in new forms. Sister Mary Ann was ill at the time, and three former members, Karen Lydon, Karen Killeen and Kathryn Brady, kept in touch with her when she was in the hospital. Sister Mary Ann shared her dream with them and asked them to carry out this dream. At the invitation of Karen Lydon, Sandy Figueroa became a part of this group. And so it began.

The first meeting took place on December 2, 2011, at LeGras Hall with Sister Mary Ann Daly of the Leadership Team. The group prayed and discussed the desire to give further expression to the Charity Charism. Each shared ways in which to continue prayer and ministry in the spirit of Elizabeth Ann Seton, Louise de Marillac and Vincent de Paul. A real transformation was experienced by each as the Holy Spirit brought them together and what wasn’t actually planned … happened! As it was expressed, “Our lives became an unfolding of God’s presence within us.”

Sister Theresa Capria and Sister Mary Kay Finneran later joined to journey with the group. They too, felt compelled to be one with the group in support.

Mission Statement

The Companions in Charity are an intentional community connected to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of New York in the spirit of Elizabeth, Louise and Vincent. They are a company of equals living into a new future, walking with complete trust in the Holy Spirit. Through deep reflection, they are seeking a new path of apostolic religious involvement.

The Companions are dedicated to the charism of charity in service and contemplative prayer. The members share a vision of a deep spirituality that requires courage, faith, creativity and commitment to the Gospel and to one another. Caring is at the heart of this vision.

The Companions are guided by the Holy Spirit to serve, pray, be present to and share with one another. Sharing is an important element. Knowledge is acquired, concerns are listened to, accountability is promoted, and caring becomes real.
