Sisters with whom she lived described her as a delight, a no-fuss, powerful pray-er with an open heart. Rosary beads were never far from her hands. She always remained close with her immediate and extended family and never missed a treasured weekly call to her sister, Mary.

Sister Anna Marian Lascell, Anna Marie, was born February 1, 1927, in the Bronx, New York, one of three children, two daughters and a son born to George and Anna Herrmann Lascell. Anna Marie attended Saint Monica Elementary School, Jamaica, New York, Bishop McDonnell High School, Brooklyn, and worked for one year before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on February 1, 1947. Sister Anna Marian received a BS in Education from Fordham University, the Bronx, and later earned New York State Certification for Grades N – 6.

Sister Anna Marian served for fifty-five years in active ministry. During her forty years in elementary education, she taught at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Immaculate Conception, both in Manhattan, Saint Mary, Yonkers, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton, Resurrection, Rye, Saint Joachim in Beacon, and served as Principal of Saint Ann in Yonkers. In 1988, Sister Anna began fifteen years as an assistant in the office of the Salesian Missions in New Rochelle, where she put her capable mind and hands to any need.

In 2003, Sister Anna retired at Mount Saint Vincent Convent until 2014, when the first group of Sisters of Charity formed an assisted living community at what is now The New Jewish Home in the Bronx. In 2019, the sisters moved to the Kittay Senior Apartments on the same campus where she was residing at the time of her death on July 26, 2025, in the 78th year of commitment as a Sister of Charity of New York.

Students of Sister Anna remember both the academic and life lessons she taught and recall the fun she brought into the classroom every day. She was kind and compassionate, always ready and willing to give her time and service to others. Sisters with whom she lived described her as a delight, a no-fuss, powerful pray-er with an open heart. Rosary beads were never far from her hands. She always remained close with her immediate and extended family and never missed a treasured weekly call to her sister, Mary.

Sister Anna, we rejoice as you return to our loving God to whom you entrusted your life in faith. Your belief in the light and hope of Christ’s resurrection now comes to fulfillment. Rest in God’s eternal peace.
