Caddie, as she is known by many, is remembered as friendly and outgoing, ready with a gracious smile and a careful eye to help someone in need.

Sister Catherine, formerly Sister Stephen Dolores, was born April 29, 1937, in Manhattan, one of three children, two daughters and a son of Stephen and Catherine Mullin Walsh. Catherine attended Saint Luke Elementary School in the Bronx, and Cathedral High School in Manhattan, before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1955.

Sister Stephen received a BA in History from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and an MS in Elementary Education from Fordham University. She received Permanent Certification from New York State for Grades N–6.

Forty of Sister Catherine’s forty-five years of active ministry were in the field of education. Her twenty years in elementary education were in the primary grades at Saint Peter in Haverstraw, Saint Peter in Brooklyn, and Saint Athanasius in the Bronx. While at Saint Athanasius, Sister Catherine requested permission to leave her teaching assignment to assist with the care of her brother’s children following the death of their mother. After a year, she returned to teaching at Saint Athanasius and later was assigned to Saint Peter in Haverstraw.

Between 1979 and 1983, Sister Catherine served as an intern at the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility in its Infant Formula Program, and then provided services for the retired sisters at the Convent of Mary the Queen.

In 1983, she returned to education and worked for twenty years as an Assistant in the Corrigan Memorial Library at Saint Joseph Seminary in Yonkers. In 2016, Sister Catherine joined the retired sisters at Mount Saint Vincent Convent. In 2022, she was moved to the hospice program at Calvary Hospital where she died February 4, 2022, in the sixty-seventh year of commitment as a Sister of Charity.

Caddie, as she is known by many, is remembered as friendly and outgoing, ready with a gracious smile and a careful eye to help someone in need. She talked easily with school parents and church parishioners and was happy to assist the seminarians find the book or article needed for a class assignment. A friend remembers a story she once told Sister Caddie that gave her a good laugh, and had the punch line, walk on the sunny side of the street. Sister Caddie often used it as a reminder to find the bright side in situations.

The prayers of the Church often express longing for the coming of our God, stirring that same longing within each of us. Sister Caddie, you have heard the call by God to come home, and the desire of your heart will soon be satisfied. You will know God’s gracious smile as you meet face to face. We rejoice in your peace.
