Priests Honored: As the Year for Priests draws to a close, our Congregation honored the men of the cloth with whom they have worked in parishes and ministries. Our June 7 observance included Vespers followed by dinner at Mount Saint Vincent; 65 Priests and 131 Sisters and SC Associates attended. Sr. Regina Bechtle’s reflection from the celebration is online.

St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan: The Board of Directors of Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers reluctantly voted to authorize the closure of St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan inpatient services including all acute, rehab, and behavioral health. The April 6 vote came after a six-month long effort to save the financially troubled institution, which has operated in the Village for over 160 years. The hospital was the first healthcare mission of the Sisters of Charity of New York after their establishment as a Congregation. The Sisters have issued a statement on this.
Easter Season Reflections: Easter is not just Sunday, April 4; it is the fifty days from Easter Day until the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, May 23. The Easter season celebrates the three dimensions of the Resurrection, Ascension, and the sending of the Spirit. During this season, enjoy Charity Wisdom from our founders and prayerful thoughts from our Sisters and Associates.

Vision Magazine: Our winter 2009/2010 issue covers sponsored ministries, celebrations, Jubilarians, Broadway Blessing. and a mini mystery.

We’re in our second year of FREE evening English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes at Mount Saint Vincent. The spring program runs March 15 – May 19. We had a great turnout from those wishing to volunteer as tutors and those eager to improve their reading, writing and everyday conversational English skills. There will also be a summer session.
If you’re interested in being either an ESL student or volunteer tutor, contact Sr. Mary Katherine Hamm, SC, at 718.549.9200 x 264 or mkhamm@scny.org
We’ve updated the “Charity Wisdom” and “Prayer, for Real” sections of our web site for the season. Plus, Sr. Sheila Brosnan, SC, has written a Lenten Reflection. This year, the 40 days of Lent run from Ash Wednesday (February 17) through Easter Saturday (April 3); Sundays during the period don’t count as part of the 40 days.
The origins of the word “Lent” are obscure, but it probably evolved out of similar terms in ancient Anglo, Saxon, and Germanic languages, all of which referred to spring, new life, and hope. Although Lent generally is considered to be a time of mourning and repentance, it is also designated as a time of new life and hope because we receive new life through Christ’s death. Talk and Panel Discussion: Sr. Vivienne Joyce, SC, was a panelist discussing “Vatican II, Women and the Church Today” on February 11 at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on Park Avenue in Manhattan. The evening’s featured speaker was Margaret O’Brien Steinfels.
Sr. Vivienne is a spiritual director, supervisor of spiritual directors, and an Adjunct Professor of the Spiritual Direction Program at Fordham University. Formerly, she was an associate director of pastoral counseling training at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health.
Work Fest 2010:  Sr. Cecilia Harriendorf, SC, Director of Campus Ministry at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, accompanied seven CMSV students to Appalachia during Spring break. Between March 13 & 20, they repaired substandard housing and built new homes for the low-income families of the Appalachia region.
Sister has accompanied student volunteers to Appalachia for several years now. The young people find that by giving to those in need, they receive something spiritual themselves in this alternative to the sometimes wild spring break trips covered by the media.

Online Discernment Retreat: The Congregation participated in this event for women and men interested in exploring a call to Religious life. The February retreat was experienced in the privacy of one’s own home and at one’s convenience.  Reflection materials were available on the Internet and participants could contact a retreat director via e-mail to share their thoughts. (For us, that was Sr. Maria Iglesias, SC:  908-295-5476 or marialouisei@aol.com)
Winter Alum Retreat: Sr. Mary E. Mc Cormick, SC, was the featured speaker at the College of Mount Saint Vincent retreat held January 31. Her theme was "Elizabeth Seton's Spirituality and Yours" – a fitting close to the yearlong Bicentennial celebration of the founding of the Sisters of Charity in the Americas. Sr. Mary is a Retreat Director, Spiritual Director and writer.
Mounties of all ages were invited to this afternoon of conversation and reflection that was followed by a Wine and Cheese Reception.

We start the year off by posting biographies of our deceased Sisters to the web site.
