Earth Day 2012
Awakening the Dreamer – Changing the Dream

On April 22—Earth Day 2012–about fifty participants from the New York metro area gathered at the Convent of Mary the Queen in Yonkers for a workshop designed to engage folks in creating a more environmentally sustainable, socially just and spiritually fulfilling future for Planet Earth. Besides Sisters of Charity and associates, there were volunteers and friends from the Little Sisters of the Assumption Services in East Harlem, colleagues and several other interested individuals from the area.

Awakening the Dreamer–Changing the Dream is an international movement that seeks to reconcile the dream of the developed nations with those in developing countries. Using DVDs, conversation, and reflection about where we are now and how we got here, we left with a sense of connection and the knowledge that each of us are co-creators of the world we want to see.

Despite the rainy afternoon we left hopeful for new people and thought connections were made, and convictions deepened that each one is a co-creator of the world we want to see. For more information on the movement, go to www.awakeningthedreamer.org

Awakening the Dreamer
Changing the Dream Symposium

Thank you so much for inviting me to the Symposium. I was already very aware about most of the topics discussed. I left very hopeful knowing that there are already seeds of awareness planted on a grass roots level that have the potential to grow into an organized and powerful network of people working towards an incredibly important and common goal: sustainability.
Everyone there seemed to be conscious of the various obstacles and connections that branch out into the subjects people are reluctant to speak about in mixed company; politics, race, religion and corporatocracy. It is all connected.
Last night, I e-mailed two young people who attended the symposium and expressed my gratitude that they are already awake at such a young age. I have a few more e-mails to send out today.

A call to 'wake-up'—not to just be a dreamer of a better world--but to be willing to take a 'starting step'; the worksheets were a concrete way to help me make that step!

It was a wonderful reawakening to understand the oneness of all creation.

It was a heart awakening.

I would just like to say I appreciated the connection between overwhelming issues and the view of what is happening on the micro level, all through the world. The experience of the ATD workshop was an excellent reminder to stay in touch with hope, faith and awareness that humanity’s basic orientation is for life and goodness, even when we are faced with such enormous issues and seemingly difficult problems that have little obvious solutions. The videos were very well done and kept the focus on the wholeness of the presentation.

The very good video and an opportunity to share, although limited, and the 3 prong theme made it a very wholistic approach to Earth Day. I was stimulated to share it with my 1st to 6th grade classes on Monday and gave them the opportunity through the library to sign out books dealing with care of the earth and its creatures. They were enthusiastic.

It was so good to see sisters, lay colleagues and young adults gathered at the Queen around the desire to make our world more sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just. The Awakening the Dreamer – Changing the Dream DVDs and material offer a process to help individuals and groups: identify assumptions on what constitutes success and quality of life; name underlying sources of problems; tap into imagination and dreams that speak to the reality that we are interrelated and one. I found the afternoon stimulating, inspiring, hope filled and, above all, a bringing together of people of different ages, cultures and ethnicities who are committed to being the change they want to bring about. The question I ask now is “How might I share this rich Awakening the Dreamer – Changing the Dream experience with others?”
