Scripture Reflections
These comments on Scripture and on events of our time
flow from the prayerful reflection and rich experience
of our

to offer them to you, and pray that these words will open your heart
more fully to the living Word of God.

Candlemas — Presentation of the Lord
February 2, 2012
images/rembrant_presentation12.jpg
On this day in 1857 Mother Angela Hughes and several sisters took formal possession of Font Hill, the former estate of actor Edwin Forrest, and named it Mount St. Vincent.

Many Sisters celebrate the anniversary of their entrance into the congregation on February 2.

Read a poem by Alice Feeley, RDC, about the prophetess Anna, who with Simeon welcomed the Christ Child and his parents in the Temple (Luke 2:36).

Anna
(from Rembrandt’s Simeon and Anna in the Temple)

Simeon knows who they are,

the wounds that lie ahead,

but the backlight is all hers. Standing tall

she might be twice her size

arms raised to bless the young family

with welcome and delight.

Anna, widow of eighty four,

waiting, worshiping,

waiting, fasting,

waiting, praying

in temple shadows all these years.

Now, the moment

when ceaseless thanksgiving

covers her with light,

a voice for all who wait.

- Alice Feeley, RDC (used with permission)
