July 31 marks the anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Charity in Emmitsburg, MD, in 1809. August brings Mary’s feast of the Assumption (Aug. 15) and the 236th birthday of St. Elizabeth Seton (Aug. 28).

193 years ago, in August, 1817, the first 3 Sisters of Charity arrived in New York to care for orphan children of immigrants.

From centuries ago, the words of our founders still resound, full of wisdom and insight for today. As summer days stretch before us, Saints Elizabeth Seton, Vincent de Paul, and Louise de Marillac invite us to open ourselves to the Spirit’s life in us and around us. They remind us that a loving God waits to meet us at every moment.

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON

28th August [Feast of] Saint Augustine -- and my happy Birth day…. O order my goings in Thy way that my footsteps slip not.

Knowing as I do so well your heart’s full desire to serve our Lord purely, I can say nothing to you, dearest soul, but to keep well to what you believe to be the grace of the moment. You will so often be at a stand for what is best in a situation so new, but only do your best as you always have done, and leave the rest for our dear God. (Mother Seton’s words to a Sister being sent on mission.)

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Your strength is Divine Providence, which initiated your Company; for who has chosen you, I ask you; who has made you what you are if not God?

ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC

May our Lord Jesus Christ bestow His Spirit upon us, so we may be so filled with His Spirit that we may do nothing or say nothing except for His glory and His holy love…O Eternal light, lift my blindness! O perfect unity, create in me simplicity of being! Humble my heart to receive your graces.
